DISCUSSION
When you right-click a Windows executable file (e.g. files ending in .exe
or .dll) you can select Properties, Digital Signatures to verify the digital
signature of the file, which lets you identify the publisher and integrity
of the file. Cloanto signs all executable files it publishes with Microsoft
Authenticode technology. If you selected Properties/Digital Signatures on
an executable file and noticed an error message, or no digital signature at
all, or a digital signature not signed by Cloanto Corporation, a Las Vegas,
Nevada, USA, corporation, this may mean that the file is either incomplete or corrupt.
This may have been caused by a download problem, or, for example, by a virus program. Before worrying,
see if the following considerations apply:
- If you don't have at least Internet Explorer 4 installed on Windows 95, or Internet
Explorer 4 or Service Pack 4 on Windows NT 4.0, your version of Windows may not support
Authenticode, and selecting Properties on a file will not show any digital signature
information.
- If you see an error message saying "Unknown error" or "Digital Signature
Information - The revocation process could not continue - the
certificate(s) could not be
checked" (or a similar message, depending on browser language and version) try and
disable the "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" or "Check for
certificate revocation" setting (or equivalent option) in the Advanced Internet
Options (Internet Explorer or Control Panel). If, after the change, the error does not
occur any more, it was probably caused by a bug in a piece of Microsoft
signing code which may have affected some digital signatures by Cloanto between
January 12, 1999 and June 11, 1999.
If the above considerations do not apply, we recommend that you
download
the software again.
