Currency Server vs. Managed Services

TOPIC

Q: What are the specific differences between the Currency Server software and the managed services? When should I choose one or the other?

DISCUSSION

A: As explained in more detail in the Managed Services section, Currency System's managed services are positioned as an entry-level solution. The Currency Server software itself not only includes and is able to provide the full functionality provided by managed services both locally and across a network, but it offers additional local configuration and administration options, higher performance and total independence from possible network availability and latency issues.

As a general rule of thumb, we recommend to consider the managed service option in the following cases:

  • If you only require a basic exchange rate data feed or equivalent Web service (information only, no or limited number of conversions)
  • If you would like to access the service on a non-Windows system, and you cannot install the server software on a Windows system

Cases in which we recommend to deploy Currency Server include the following:

  • If you need to not only get exchange rate information, but also do actual conversions (which need to take into account certain rules)
  • If you need to control where the exchange rates come from
  • If you intend to currency-enable an IIS system (in which case you can install Currency Server on the same host)
  • If you would like to provide a feed or Web service which is accessed by your own customers
