Differences between Free and Commercial Version of MenuBox

TOPIC

Q: What's the difference between the free version and the registered version?

DISCUSSION

A: The main difference is very minor, and consists in a small splash window which briefly appears when the unregistered version of MenuBox is used:

[ MenuBox splash window ]

The window appears when MenuBox starts or exits, and is not more intrusive than similar messages which some high-end authoring and "demo" tools display even after you purchase them.

After you register the software you can sign your projects with the Sign Project tool before distribution, which removes the Free Version message.

The limited features of MenuBox which can be invoked directly by the command line (i.e. without using menubox.ini) never cause a splash screen to be displayed.

The registered version of MenuBox offers the additional advantage of creating a unique publisher entity and namespace. Within this scope, which belongs exclusively to a given registered user and to its MenuBox applications, it optionally becomes possible to:

  • Use unique IDs to identify specific MenuBox applications (e.g. so that MenuBox is never opened twice with the same content if the same CD is inserted in the drive multiple times, but rather the first window is brought to the front)
  • Set and read nonvolatile (persistent) variables to control situations such as one-time messages, or to skip procedures that have already completed
